Dog rescue is a natural extension to horse rescue when one is located in very rural areas as many dogs are abandoned in the country by guardians believing dogs can revert to a wild state and find their own food. However, the truth is much more sad and terrifying for the dogs who are killed by cars, starve to death or get eaten by local predators.
Soon after establishing the sanctuary in the vast open area of Northeastern California we starting getting calls from community members asking us to help foster or give sanctuary to unwanted and homeless dogs.
The first dogs here were three litters of puppies; border collies, wolf hybrids and pit bulls. All the puppies soon found homes and all but two of the hybrids went to wolf sanctuaries. Since our beginnings here, we have rehabilitated and placed over 50 dogs into permanent homes.
And like the horses, the dogs enjoy the freedom of our large sanctuary. With no neighbors for 5 miles the dogs can bark and make doggy noise as much as they please. Summers mean groups of the dog s get to follow us as we drive the ranch truck out to our remote range area where they enjoy swimming in the ponds and running and playing for hours. So much room makes for a doggy paradise.
So, although we focus on horse rescue, our mission, at its base, is to end suffering when and where we find it. So we cannot ignore the needs of the many dogs who come our way.
